2) Since I became involved with the WFD , I have learned many interesting things from worldwide drummers. I can now teach these things TO YOU.
3) I'm still learning and developing slick new things such as my "3 foot technique" which I can also show my students.
4) I enjoy FUNK and FUSION type music the best , but I can also teach basic rock beats, country , jazz and POP beats.
5) Because I work with double bass drums, I can also show METAL beats.
WHAT IS THE WFD?
Between 2000 and 2008,twice a year, in January and July, the WFD (Worlds Fastest Drummer) competition was held at the NAMM show in Anaheim California and Nashville Tennessee. 2 years in a row I was a TOP TEN finalist for "fastest feet" with a score of almost 800 (beats per minute) Even FOX SPORTS got involved.I placed 3rd a few years ago and at the age of 60 just finished in second place in the Summer of 2016
6) My music video has been on satellite across Canada.
7) I'm playing drums on 2 music CDs and you can hear music samples by going to MUSICINIT.COM
8) I have had ONLINE FREE DRUM VIDEOS for more than 3 years.
How does your drumming stand out from others?
I have a 3 foot technique. Look around http://teachmedrums.com and you will see examples of how powerful this is. I have also produced 2 CDs and 2 Music videos, one which won 2 awards. This gives me a BIG PICTURE approach to drumming. Yes I can play some very complex things on drums, but most of the time, in real music, LESS IS MORE.
What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
Customers usually ask."What kind of music do you play?" I can honestly answer "EVERYTHING" .I play pop, rock, blues ,jazz, country, punk, disco, techno , swing, fusion and even older "hard rock". The only WESTERN music I don't play is the newer Black Metal, or Dark Metal......but I can try ! If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade?
Any inside secrets to share?
USE A METRONOME TO PRACTICE! I had been told TWICE in the FIRST 8 YEARS to use a metronome but didn't listen. I said the same thing as most kids these days....."BUT I PRACTICE WITH RECORDED MUSIC" ! It's not the same. Only a metronome has a perfect PULSE. If you want to play "In the pocket" or "Groove" you must practice with a metronome. If you want to play in a studio, don't even try until you have a year of practice with a metronome.
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a drum teacher like you?
It is one thing to know HOW TO DRUM. It is another to be able to teach this to a student. This is even harder with new students. Although I prefer drum students with some previous training, I have also taught beginners and can teach beginners.
Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
I am constantly watching for new drummers on the internet. Drummers like Virgil Donati have "moved the bar up" in the past 20 years. My own drumming has far surpassed what I thought was even "possible" 20 years ago. I'm constantly learning new things and new ways of practicing, and producing music with drums.
What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?
Automation is perhaps the scariest thing for drummers. Drummers have been put out of work with drum machines since the 1980's. I see my role as a "drummer" changing dramatically over the next few years. Drummers are now playing electronic drums and DJs are triggering even whole drum and bass "grooves". For a drummer to keep busy, he/she must also learn some of these other "drumming" techniques to take back some work from the DJ. Keen timing will allow you to trigger precisely "on time".
THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE, IF YOU DROP BY MY CHURCH, BANWELL COMMUNITY CHURCH, ON A SUNDAY AROUND 10:30 AM, THAT YOU WILL SEE ME PLAYING DRUMS. I USUALLY PLAY 3 OUT OF 4 SUNDAYS WITH THE "PRAISE AND WORSHIP" TEAM.
